Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Add an authenticator app or a passkey, where to turn it on in the app and on the web, when fomo asks for it, and how to keep access.

Written by Klutch

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a second check on top of your Apple ID or Google login. fomo offers two methods: an authenticator app that gives you a six-digit code, and a passkey that uses your device's biometric unlock.

MFA is set on your wallet, not on one device. Turning it on in the app also turns it on for the web app, and the other way round.

Where to turn it on

In the app, open the Portfolio tab, tap the gear icon, then Security, then Multi-factor authentication. On the web, open the account menu in the top navigation, then Settings, then Security, then Multi-factor authentication.

The Security screen also holds Screen Lock in the app and PIN lock on the web; those lock the app on one device and are separate from MFA.

Setting it up

  1. Turn on Authenticator app and follow the setup. Add the entry to your authenticator app and enter the code it shows to finish.

  2. Once the authenticator is on, you can add a passkey. A passkey lets you pass the check with Face ID, Touch ID or your fingerprint instead of typing a code.

The authenticator app comes first: a passkey can't be added without one, and the authenticator can't be removed while a passkey is still on.

Finish the authenticator setup in one go. Each time the setup screen is opened a new entry is created, so an entry from an earlier attempt no longer gives valid codes.

When fomo asks for it

The check appears after every login, on every private key export, withdrawal and send, and once every 24 hours when you open the app. On the app's lock screen you can use your authenticator app or log out, and once a passkey is set up you can also unlock with your device biometric.

Keeping access

There are no recovery codes, so keep the fomo entry in your authenticator app and do not delete it. Reinstalling the fomo app does not remove or reset MFA.

If you see "Too many attempts. Try again later.", stop retrying. Wait a few hours, then try once with a fresh code read from your authenticator app at that moment, without reopening the setup screen. Reinstalling the app does not clear this.

If you have lost access to your authenticator app, contact support from the app or from the Contact support option on the lock screen, and the team will walk you through verifying your identity.
